Heavenly vintage style swimwear from La Luna

Cute swimwear ahoy!

Okay girls, get your credit cards ready. Swimsuit season usually proves disappointing for me as I try to find a swimsuit with vintage style flair. I've looked in vintage stores for 'actual' vintage swimsuits, but the fabric is usually horrible and worn out, and the fit is never right.

All the 'surfer girl' Hawaii 5-0 itsy-bitsy bikinis in the trendy stores leave me cold, yet the alternative sensible 'what my mom would wear' stuff from the Sears catalogue is even worse.

I want glamour! I want vivaciousness! I don't want to show off my entire butt cheeks!

Luckily for me, my beau sent me a link to For Luna - vintage inspired swimwear for the modern gal. This UK-based mail order company offers a great range of "I'd actually wear it!" swimwear for ladies with retro sensitibilities. Now I can swim like a Hollywood siren yet not feel like my entire assets are on show.

The range is not huge, but they have some really nice designs that should appeal to many. I broke down and ordered the cute red bikini below.

Black 'Esther Williams' one-piece (also comes in other colours)

Cute bikini - it comes in red, white, black, leopard and cherry.

A nice touch is that you can order the bikini tops and bottoms separately, so if you're not a 'perfect' size you can order the top and bottoms in different sizes (or colours!)

The prices are not outlandish (around US$75 plus shipping for the bikini) and I got an email within a day saying my order had been dispatched.

Of course, as I live in New Zealand we are just coming into winter right now, so bikini-shopping is a little bit off-season. But hey, there's always the local pool!

Just a note... I make swimsuits in a retro style that you can pick your own fabric! I am going to incorperate cotton swimwear as well,,,but for now most of my suits are from lycra or spandex. Love your blog!

No, don't wear them to the local pool! I made the mistake of wearing my Esther Williams halterneck to the pool and it has now faded severely in the bum region.

And jewlover2, I also wore them while pregnant and they looked great!

Update:

Red Bikini arrived so quickly - their shipping department must be really on the ball. Overall the construction and the material of the swimsuit felt really high quality and the colour was gorgeous.

HOWEVER... I'm sad to say it did not fit me very well, which is nothing to do with the swimsuit per se but more to do with the fact that I'm less than spectacularly well-endowed up top.

The suit bottoms fit perfectly and I have to say were awesomely comfortable and flattering. The bikini top, even tho it was the smallest size they do, was still a little big for l'il old me, and even though it was padded the entire cup isn't padded - just the central portion - and you could clearly see the line of the pad through the material when I tried it on. Not ideal.

Luckily For Luna's return policy seems really rock solid and I sent it back today. Rather than getting a refund I'm now playing swimsuit-Russian-roulette as I've requested the halter-neck black & white polka dot one-piece as a replacement. I'm hoping the slightly different bust style will work better for me.

So, for anyone who likes the bikini I can say that I liked it and think it would be awesome on someone with a little more cleavage to fill it out.

Will update again when the new suit arrives!

your site is soooo cool. I was researching this club I belong to in Salem, New Jersey for material that would look good in my presentation to the membership. See we turn 100 this year. During my research, so far, I found that a Marie Thelin did a high dive at a carnival my club put on in 1920... my search brought me to your site if you want email at cathyhunter_tom@comcast.net
